Steps to earn a private pilot license
Consider a first-time discovery flight
New to flying? Start with a $149 first-time discovery flight to meet an instructor and experience the controls.
Complete the student-pilot and medical steps
Your instructor can explain student-pilot certification and when an FAA medical certificate is needed. Address medical questions early so they do not delay solo flight.
Begin ground and flight training
Learn aircraft control, regulations, weather, navigation, communications, decision-making, cross-country flying, and emergency procedures.
Pass the knowledge test
Prepare for and pass the FAA private pilot airplane knowledge test before your practical test.
Complete solo and experience requirements
Part 61 requires at least 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours with an instructor and 10 hours of solo flight. Many students need additional time to reach proficiency.
Pass the private pilot checkride
After your instructor confirms you are ready, complete the oral and flight portions of the practical test with an FAA-designated examiner.
How much does a private pilot license cost?
Your final private pilot license cost depends primarily on the total aircraft time and instructor time needed to reach checkride proficiency. Training frequency, preparation, weather, and individual progress all affect the total.
| FAA-minimum flight-time example | Current rate | Minimum example |
|---|---|---|
| Cessna 172K: 40 hours | $135/hour wet | $5,400 |
| Flight instruction: at least 20 hours | $60/hour | $1,200 |
| Aircraft plus flight instruction | $6,600 |
Important: $6,600 is an FAA-minimum flight-time example, not a quote or typical total. Ground instruction, medical certification, the FAA knowledge test, examiner fees, supplies, and any flight or instruction time beyond the minimum are additional. The FAA reports that many applicants finish with substantially more than 40 hours.
